"Wunderbar" Kurt said sarcastically, hitting his alarm clock. "Another day at school." Kurt threw of his covers and crawled out of bed, his two toed feet hitting the cold institute floor. He shuffled silently over to his dresser, pulled on some clothes, and with a loud BAMF disappeared.
Kitty had been sitting at the breakfast table eating a carrot stick and writing a letter to her parents. She looked up at the time. "Uggh, like, seven o’clock on a Saturday, this day is gonna suck." No sooner had the words left her mouth when a all-to-familiar noise sounded behind her, followed by the unmistakable smell of brimstone. "MAN, can’t a girl get some privacy???" Kitty snapped. Kurt starred back at her shocked, then started rummaging through the fridge.
"Vheres everyone else? They are going to be late for school, ja?" He said through a mouth full of sausage.
"God Kurt it‘s SUMMER, like, could you possibly be more dense?" Kitty said, her voice full of venom.
*OK* thought Kurt *So she’s in a bad mood, better not bug her.* and he left with a puff of smoke, only to arrive in front of an over-stressed Jean, who just happened to be carrying a vast pile of books. Kurt dodged out of her way, but not fast enough. Jean’s foot caught on his tail. All was chaos, the pile of books came tumbling down, Jean used her powers to keep them from landing on her, Kurt wasn’t that lucky. "Ach!" He cried as book after book hit him. Jean stood up, and looked down at the mass of fur and paper. "Uhh, sorry?" Kurt said, looking up helplessly. Jean scowled and telekinetically picked up the crumpled books and resumed walking down the hall. *Great, just great.* Kurt thought *it VAS an accident.*
Later, after more yelling and complaining about Kurt, The Team had decided to spend what was left of a beautiful Saturday at Bayville park, though they weren't they only ones. Todd and Lance had started quarreling over something by a large oak tree. Kurt was sitting alone, far from the other members of the X-men. He sighed. Everyone was frustrated with him, and what was worse was that he hadn’t done anything. He leaned his head over. He could hear strange snippets of the brotherhood’s conversation.
"You shouldn’t of brought it... I didn’t think you were serious... shhh, keep it down... what is someone catches us... I know but a GUN???"
Kurt froze at the last word.
"Mein Gott." He whispered under his breath, "Toads’ got a gun." Kurt attempted to act casual, he couldn’t let them know he knew. His heart rate began to quicken. Kurt stood up, and began to walk over to the group. He grabbed the arm of the nearest person, who just happened to be Kitty. Kitty spun around, her back to the Brotherhood.
"Kurt I swear I am gonna..." She stopped when she saw the panic stricken look on Kurt’s face. "What?" She said impatiently.
"Toads got a gun." Kurt muttered under his breath.
"What??" Kitty said staring.
"Toads got a gun." Kurt repeated urgently.
"A GUN??" Kitty said loudly.
Toad turned from what he was doing. Someone knew, he thought, OMG, someone knew, this was a stupid idea. He looked around him, *the filthy blue fuzz ball and the kitten* Toads heart beat rose, the blood rushed to his brain. He had to do something, he couldn’t let them tell anyone he’d stolen a gun. Did they know, or did the subject of guns just happen to be a part of their conversation? He stepped towards them and reached into the pocket of his slimy jeans. He pulled out his weapon and pointed it straight at Kitty’s back.
"Don’t move" Kurt whispered in Kitty’s ear, pulling Kitty into a tight hug.
Kitty was shaking badly, the other X-men stood behind them in fright. They weren’t the only ones shaking. Toad’s hand was moving like crazy, he had an insane look about his eyes. He panicked, his dirt covered finger slipped, pulling the trigger. It was like watching a slow motion movie, the bullet whizzed forwards. Kitty had jumped at the gunshot, causing her to phase. The bullet passed through her, leaving her unharmed, straight into the body of Kurt. Kurt didn’t make a noise, he just stood there staring into Kitty’s eyes, his hug tightened. The inducer flickered and went out. Kitty looked into his eyes.
"OmygodOmygod" She repeated.
His eyes began to flicker, the yellow glow began to dim, then it went out, revealing a pair of bright blue eyes.
Kurt’s life began to flash before his eyes, everything was going black. All he could see now was Kitty’s shocked face. *I can’t let her see me like this* He thought miserably. With his last ounce of strength he tried to teleport, and he knew no more.
Kitty had lain him on the ground. She was too shocked to cry, she was beyond tears. *He had pretty eyes, she thought. What! Had?? I can’t let him die! This is insane!*
"KURT, KURT, WAKE UP, please?" Her voice choked.
All of a sudden, he vanished, not like the BAMF she was used to, he was just... gone... into thin air...
A day had gone by since Kurt’s death, though it seemed like an eternity. Kurt’s last moments played through everyone’s head. Kitty had locked herself in her room and refused to talk to anyone. Jean was in Cerebro with the Professor.
"I mean, he could of teleported somewhere else." Jean managed is a shaky voice.
"I’m afraid not Jean, I think that the disappearance that you all witnessed was caused by a kick in Kurt’s mutation, kind of like how a chicken can still run around with it’s head cut off., causing him to be... well... no more." The Professor finished, he seemed tired, worn down in the way he spoke.
"But..." Jean stammered.
"I’m sorry Jean, I have already notified the boy’s parents, we will hold a funeral here." The Professor said mournfully.
"Any news on Toad?" Jean questioned.
"Nothing, he made a very clean get-away." replied The Professor bitterly. After a long silence The Professor spoke up. "Jean, I know this will be hard but I need someone to speak to Kitty. She feels that Kurt’s death was her fault, she is very shaken up."
Kitty sat on her bed, her eyes full of silent tears. Her head hurt, and her face was blotchy. *I deserve it.* She thought bitterly *I treated Kurt like... like trash, before he died.* A fresh wave of tears engulfed her. A loud knock on the door caused Kitty to jump.
"Hello?" she stammered.
"Hi Kitty it’s Jean." Jean said soothingly.
Kitty stood up. She trudged to the door and phased her head through. She screamed in fright. Kurt was sitting in the hall beside Jean, though it was not the Kurt she knew, this Kurt’s face was sad.
"K-k.. Kurt?" She muttered in disbelief.
"Yes, that’s why I’m here, to talk to you about Kurt’s death." Jean said sullenly.
*I can’t believe it, he’s sitting right there, why can’t she see him?* Kitty phased completely through the door then stood in the hall next to Jean. Kurt was gone. *I am so going crazy* she thought bewildered, as she opened the door and followed Jean in.
Kurt couldn’t believe it. Kitty had seen him! Maybe he’s not a ghost. *But that doesn't make sense. I _thought_ I had died. The pain is gone, and so is the bullet., but then vhy can no one else see me? * In what he thought were his last moments, Kurt had tried to teleport, but it was never completed. He thought he had died, and was now a wandering spirit. *Ok then, I must be trapped in some other dimension. Nein, When I was trapped in middleverse the Prof still found me. but I’m not dead. Ok Kurt just remind yourself your not dead. Kitty! Vhen she phases, she passes through vhere-ever I am! That has got to be it. Das ist how she saw me! So all I need to do is track Kitty down, and tell her I’m not dead while she’s phasing! and she’s supposed to believe me? I don’t believe me. Oh vell.*
Kitty was more shaken up than usual after the appearance of Kurt. *Or was it really Kurt? My mind is playing some messed up tricks on me.* dispirited, she phased through her door, only to come face to face with Kurt. It lasted only a few seconds then he was gone. Kitty burst into tears. Her guilt was haunting her. She ran to her bed and flung herself upon it. Music was drifting from the lawn. * today is the funeral, I don’t want to be there.* The music was overwhelming.
"Spend all your time waiting, for that second chance, for a break that would make it Ok..."
Kitty phased, she didn’t know why, she felt like she had to. She opened her eyes. A blue hand reached up and brushed a tear away. Kitty hugged him.
The sun began to set, light flooded the room, Kitty’s eyes began to tear.
"I’m so sorry." She whispered.
She kissed him. The world seemed to lie still. She remembered his warm smile, when they first met, how she had screamed at the sight of him. She felt a pang of guilt.
Why couldn’t he leave her be? It was worse seeing him again. Or was it?
Emptiness filled her heart.
"Don’t leave me, please." She whispered.
"Never..." he replied
Kitty couldn’t phase any longer, she looked up. Kurt was gone.
"NO" She collapsed on the bed, tears flowing down her red cheeks.
The funeral had been over for several hours. It wasn’t really public, Xavier just did it for the sake of the kids. Rogue walked down the hallway, lost in thought. Kitty hadn’t been there either, Rogue felt terrible, Kitty was taking this harder than anyone. At any other time, Rogue would have used this to tease Kitty about her affection for the elf. The thought struck her, never again would she be able to taunt Kitty about Kurt, he’s gone. She missed him, and he HAD felt like a brother to her. Rogue decided to peek in on Kitty, to give her support.
"Kitty." She said gently opening the door.
Kitty was sound asleep. Her face was stained with tears, and her eyes were swollen, she looked terrible. *I’ll just let her sleep* thought Rogue stretching *It is late anyway*. Suddenly Kitty screamed and sat up in bed, she started crying again.
"What’s the matter?!" said an alarmed Rogue. Kitty looked up at her.
"If I tell you something, would you like, promise not to laugh?" Kitty said hoarsely.
"Of course not sugar." Rogue reassured her.
"Well, during the funeral, well, uhmm, like, I kinda saw Kurt." Kitty said silently.
Rogue stared at her, not in a mean way, more of a pitying way. *Oh great* thought Kitty *Someone else other than me to think that I’m a raving lunatic.* Rogue couldn’t think of a reply. Then finally she said
"Why don’ ya go back to bed? Thing will be better in the mornin’." Rogue walked to her bed and slipped under the covers.
*What if she did see Kurt?* She pondered an hour later *I don’t think I believe in ghosts.* More noises from Kitty’s bed. *Great, another Nightmare.* She got out of bed, and walked, shivering, over to Kitty’s bed.
"Kitty" she called.
*Oh now she’s in too deep a sleep to get up. What if I, no, well no one would know...* Rogue looked down at Kitty, then silently reached out and touched Kitty’s arm.
A Large flash of memories overwhelmed her. She could handle it, she had done it before. She kept them in nice stacks in her mind, flipping through them like magazines, then she found what she wanted. She was shocked, Kitty clearly remembered seeing Kurt. Rogue sat on her bed, studying the memories, then
"AH-HAH!"
What Kitty had not realized was Kurt was appearing every time she phased. *Well, here goes nothin’.* Rogue used Kitty’s power and phased. She looked up. Kurt was sitting on Kitty’s bed, looking longingly at Kitty‘s face. Then his haunted gaze fell upon Rogue.
"Kurt?" She whispered.
Kurt’s face lit up, "You can see me?"
"Yes, but I’m not believing it!" Rogue replied excitedly.
"Listen" Kurt said hurriedly, "I’m stuck somewhere, I’m not dead! bitte help me! Bitte?"
Then he was gone.
::PROFESSOR!:: Rogue screamed mentally ::PROFESSOR!::.
::Rogue calm down!::
*thank God* thought Rogue.
::Rogue, please wake up Kitty, then get her to phase and tell Kurt to meet me by Cerebro.::
The Professor’s mental thoughts left her mind as Rogue ran towards Kitty.
Ten minutes later, they had made it to Cerebro after what seemed like hours. Kitty was overjoyed.
"I can’t believe it, I can’t believe it!!!" She repeated over and over.
"Kitty" the Professor said calmly, "I need you to phase me so that I may see to Kurt."
"Like, totally!" Squealed Kitty.
She grabbed the Professor’s hand and phased. Kurt stood in front of them.
"You have no wound?" Inquired the Professor.
"Nichts!" Kurt said happily.
"Well, I guess the only question now is how to get you out of here." Said the Professor smiling.
"Jawohl!" Exclaimed Kurt.
Kitty un-phased and turned to the Professor. "Now What?"
"Now" said the Professor "I need Rogue to take some of Kitty’s power, Kitty’s is not enough to pull Kurt back."
"Is it really that simple?" Rogue chimed in.
"I believe so, Kitty’s power may have a reverse effect on what has already happened." said the Professor.
Rogue walked over to Kitty and tapped her lightly on the shoulder. "Ready?" she said.
"Yup!" Kitty exclaimed. "One... Two... Three... GO!"
They phased and both nearly tackled Kurt. Each grabbed one of Kurt’s arms and each other’s hands.
"Ok, pray to God this works!"
Everyone closed their eyes and un-phased. They opened them slowly.
"It worked!!!" Kitty and Rogue said in unison.
"Kurt" said the Professor happily "don’t get me wrong, I am overjoyed to see you, but who’s up for a 6 o’clock breakfast?"
"I’m starved!" Kurt Exclaimed.
"How did I know he would say that? One minute back from the dead and his minds already on food." Rogue said sarcastically.
Kurt began to walk out the door when Kitty grabbed him, "Not so fast elf!" She pulled him into a tight hug, and planted a big one right in his fuzzy lips. Kurt looked back at her dumbfounded. Then he smiled and began to kiss her back.
It was 6:30am. Only Rogue, Kitty, Kurt, and the Prof were up. Kurt had already cleaned ten plates of sausage and German pancakes. Five minutes later, Kitty had insisted that Kurt let her do the dishes, Rogue went back to bed, and the Prof went to inform Kurt’s disbelieving parents. Kurt sat alone in the dining room. Scott walked in, yawning and stretching.
"Waz fur breakfast??" He said in a groggy voice.
He began to head towards the kitchen when he spun around. "KURT?!" He shouted.
He began to speak a lot of gibberish while pointing and staring. Kitty walked in. "What’s the matter Scott?" She said in an impish voice.
"Kur... k...K... KURT!" he managed to say before collapsing into a heap on the floor.
